3.1. WHAT IS MORPHOLOGY?
Morphology is the subfield of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words and the rules governing word formation. While phonology deals with the abstract sound system, morphology acts as the bridge between sounds and meaning. It examines how meaningful units are combined, modified, and structuralized to create the vocabulary of a language.

1. MORPHEME
A morpheme is the smallest meaningful or grammatical unit in a language. It cannot be broken down into smaller parts without destroying its baseline meaning. Morphemes are abstract mental constructs written inside curly brackets: { }.
- Example: The word unhappy contains two morphemes: {un-} (meaning “not”) and {happy} (meaning “glad”).
2. MORPH
A morph is the concrete physical realization of a morpheme in speech or writing. It is the actual segment of sound or letters that represents the abstract morpheme.
- Example: In cats, the physical string /s/ is the morph that represents the abstract plural morpheme.
3. ALLOMORPH
An allomorph is a phonetic or structural variant of a single underlying morpheme. Allophones are variations of sounds; allomorphs are variations of grammatical/meaning units. They perform the exact same semantic function but change shape based on the surrounding sounds.
Classic Example: The English Plural Morpheme {PLU}
The abstract English plural morpheme has three regular phonological allomorphs:
- [-s]: Occurs after voiceless consonants (except sibilants).
- Examples: cats /kæts/, caps /kæps/, cliffs /klɪfs/.
- [-z]: Occurs after voiced consonants and all vowels.
- Examples: dogs /dɒɡz/, beds /bedz/, boys /bɔɪz/.
- [-ɪz]or[-əz]: Occurs after sibilant (hissing/buzzing) consonants (/s, z, ʃ, ʒ, tʃ, dʒ/).
- Examples: buses /bʌsɪz/, boxes /bɒksɪz/, judges /dʒʌdʒɪz/.
4. AFFIXATION
Affixation is the morphological process of adding a bound morpheme (an affix) to a root or stem to form a new word or modify its grammatical function. Affixes are structurally classified by where they attach:
- Prefixes: Attached before the root (e.g., un- + tie = untie).
- Suffixes: Attached after the root (e.g., sad + -ness = sadness).
- Infixes: Inserted directly inside the root. English does not use regular infixes, but languages like Tagalog do. (Casual English displays mock-infixation like abso-bloody-lutely).
- Circumfixes: Attached simultaneously around the root (common in German, e.g., ge-bract-t).
3.3. WHAT IS A LEXEME?
A lexeme is an abstract vocabulary item in the mental lexicon of a language. It represents a family of structurally related words that share the same core meaning but differ in grammatical inflection. Lexemes are traditionally written in CAPITAL letters and represent the “dictionary entry” form.
- Example: RUN is a lexeme. Its individual word-forms include run, runs, running, and ran.
- Example: CHILD is a lexeme. Its individual word-forms include child and children.

1. Free vs. Bound Morphemes
- Free Morphemes: Morphemes that can stand completely alone as independent words to carry meaning.
- Examples: book, walk, apple, blue.
- Bound Morphemes: Morphemes that cannot stand alone. They must be attached to another morpheme to make sense. All affixes are bound morphemes.
- Examples: re-, un-, -ist, -ed, -s.
2. Lexical vs. Functional Morphemes (Subclasses of Free Morphemes)
- Lexical (Content) Morphemes: Words that carry real-world semantic meaning. They include nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They belong to the Open Class because new content words can easily be invented and added to the language.
- Examples: iPhone, glitch, run, beautiful, quickly.
- Functional (Grammatical) Morphemes: Words that do not point to real-world objects but establish structural, grammatical relationships inside a sentence. They include articles, conjunctions, prepositions, and pronouns. They belong to the Closed Class because the language rarely adds new items to this set.
- Examples: the, and, but, in, on, she, they.
3. Derivational vs. Inflectional Morphemes (Subclasses of Bound Morphemes)
This is a critical distinction frequently tested in university examinations:

3.5. PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES IN ENGLISH
Frequently Used Prefixes
Prefixes in English are almost exclusively derivational and change the basic semantic meaning of the root word, though they rarely change its syntactic category.
- Negative/Reversal Prefixes:
- un-: unhappy, undo, unwind
- in- / im- / il- / ir-: incorrect, impossible, illegal, irresponsible
- dis-: disagree, disappear, dislike
- mis- (wrongly): misunderstand, misbehave, mislead
- Locational/Temporal Prefixes:
- pre- (before): prewar, preview, preheat
- post- (after): postgraduate, postwar
- inter- (between): international, interact
- sub- (under): subway, substandard
- Repetition Prefixes:
- re- (again): rewrite, redo, reappear
Frequently Used Suffixes
Suffixes can be derivational (changing category/meaning) or inflectional (adding grammatical metadata).
1. Derivational Suffixes (Category Shifters)
- Noun-Forming Suffixes:
- -er / -or (agent): teacher, actor, writer
- -tion / -ation (action/state): creation, realisation, education
- -ness (state of being): sadness, kindness, happiness
- -ism (doctrine/belief): capitalism, criticism, socialism
- Adjective-Forming Suffixes:
- -ful: beautiful, helpful, careful
- -less (without): hopeless, careless, homeless
- -able / -ible: readable, flexible, edible
- Verb-Forming Suffixes:
- -ize / -ise: modernize, popularize
- -ify: purify, clarify, terrify
2. Inflectional Suffixes (The 8 Standard English Inflections)
English features exactly eight grammatical inflectional suffixes:
- Noun Plural (-s): cats, dogs
- Noun Possessive (-‘s): John’s book
- Verb Present 3rd Person Singular (-s): She walks
- Verb Past Tense (-ed): He walked
- Verb Present Participle (-ing): They are running
- Verb Past Participle (-en/-ed): It was eaten / walked
- Adjective Comparative (-er): taller, faster
- Adjective Superlative (-est): tallest, fastest
3.6. MORPHONEMICS AND MORPHOSYNTAX
Morphonemics (Morphophonemics)
Morphonemics is the analysis of the structural interactions between morphology and phonology. It maps out how the phonetic shapes of morphemes adjust automatically based on the surrounding sound environment.
Morphonemic Alternation
This refers to the structural alteration of a morpheme’s sound signature.
- Phonologically Conditioned Alternation: The choice of allomorph is determined purely by adjacent sounds (e.g., the English plural variations [-s], [-z], [-ɪz] discussed above).
- Lexically Conditioned Alternation: The choice of variant shape is driven by the specific word choice rather than basic sound rules.
- Example: The plural form of ox is oxen, not oxes. The presence of {en} is driven by the specific word ox.
- Vowel Alternation (Ablaut): Altering an internal vowel structure to signal grammatical changes.
- Example: sing (Present) \(\rightarrow \) sang (Past) \(\rightarrow \) sung (Past Participle).
- Example: goose (Singular) \(\rightarrow \) geese (Plural).
Morphosyntax
Morphosyntax is the area of study that examines the interaction between morphology and syntax. It handles the structural rules where word-internal shifts (morphology) depend on sentence-level organization (syntax).
Key Morphosyntactic Features
- Agreement (Concord): A requirement where a word shifts its internal bound morphemes to match features of another word in the sentence.
- Example: Subject-Verb Agreement. In “The dog barks”, the verb takes the suffix -s because the syntax dictates that the subject is a 3rd person singular noun. If the subject changes to “The dogs”, the verb morphology changes to “bark”.
- Case Marking: The change in a word’s morphological form depending on its grammatical role in the sentence (Subject vs. Object).
- Example: In English pronouns, we use He (Subject position) but Him (Object position). This is a morphosyntactic shift showing grammatical function.
